Using Moodle quizzes to flip the classroom and enhance independent study

Description of Presentation

As the Head of English Development at a multi-campus further education college in England, we have faced continued challenges engaging students in independent study that is standardised to curriculum objectives, whilst remaining engaging and relevant to students' needs.

In this presentation I will be discussing the ways in which we are engaging students in independent study through Moodle quizzes and developing flipped classroom techniques to enhance their use.

My presentation will be guided by my experience of using Moodle quizzes and focus on the following:

  • What is a flipped classroom?
  • How can this benefit my students?
  • Basic introduction to simple, self-assessing quizzes eg. multiple choice, matching and embedded answers (cloze)
  • Improving engagement in independent study through Moodle quizzes.
  • Improving engagement in classroom based lessons through Moodle quizzes.
  • Giving students ownership of learning through Moodle quiz development.
